We owe many of the numerous swimming lakes we have today in the Munich area to the end of the Würm Glacial Period. Kirchsee near Sachsenkam was also formed by the melting of the Isar-Loisach Glacier and is now the perfect destination for idyllic days of swimming in the summer. It may not exactly be unknown, but it’s still a lot quieter here than, say, at Lake Starnberg. If you’d like to spend a relaxing day away from the crowds and take a breather, then you should plan a trip here.
A true natural paradise

Nestled between Lake Starnberg and Lake Tegernsee is the small Kirchsee, which, with its modest 42 hectares, hardly stands out. Don’t let its small size fool you, though, because you can spend some truly wonderful days here. Since 1940, large sections of the shoreline have been under nature conservation, which is why you’re only allowed to swim at specific, designated spots. Furthermore, it’s prohibited to use boats of any kind on Kirchsee or to go windsurfing in order to protect the habitat of the many animals and rare plants in and around the lake.
But you’re welcome to fish in the fish-rich Kirchsee: species such aseel, perch, pike, carp, rainbow trout, catfish, and zander can be found here. As a visiting angler, you can purchase a fishing license to then pursue your favorite sport in peace and quiet. Everyone else can enjoy the Kirchsee as a swimming spot—its water quality is considered very good. Since it’s fed by warm bog water, it’s relatively warm and can reach temperatures of 26°C in the summer. Perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to take an ice bath!
Swimming at Kirchsee

If you’d like to take a trip to Kirchsee, it’s best to head to the north shore. Here you’ll find a swimming area with two piers where you can dangle your feet in the water and soak up the sun. A kiosk with a beer garden and even breakfast options keeps you well-fed during the season, so you don’t need to bring your own snacks. Not far from the swimming area, the water rescue service has its station and ensures your safety. There’s also a paid parking lot with free restrooms —so everything you need for a worry-free day at the lake!
You’ll find another swimming spot on the south shore if you approach Kirchsee from Reutberg Abbey. You can only reach it on foot or by bike, so you can combine your trip with a nice walk. No matter where you go swimming, when the weather is nice, you’ll have a beautiful view of the Benediktenwand towering in the distance. This view alone makes a day trip to Kirchsee well worth it—it’s a great place to truly relax.
