The Munich summer is bursting with cool events. There are concerts here, an open-air movie theater there, and a cultural event over there. And then there’s free & easy at Backtage, where you can get all that and more in one place—completely free of charge. The festival is one of the annual highlights of Munich’s event calendar and is back again this year with a fantastic lineup .
Over 200 concerts
The free & easy festival was founded in the mid-90s and has been a non-commercial festival from the very beginning. It is funded exclusively through the sale of food and drinks on-site, which is why admission is free. The free & easy festival is now celebrating its 30th anniversary and has always retained its alternative spirit. Music is at the heart of the event, so several acts will be performing for you every day. Over 200 bands are lined up for you this year, playing a mix of rock, metal, punk, and indie, as well as hip-hop and pop.
This year, you can look forward to Schmutzki, Milleniumkid, Jupiter Jones, Mari Kattmann, Stresshotel Mutti, and many more acts. Performances will take place both outdoors and indoors at Arena Süd, the Werk, the Halle, the Club, and the Backyard. After the live acts, DJs will spin sets for you every evening, offering a wide mix of genres. In addition to regular concerts and parties , there are a few specials to look forward to, such as the Quiet Disco, the Roller Skating Disco, an Iron Maiden tribute, a Star Wars night, and karaoke. Plus, you can look forward to the German Air Guitar Championship right on the first weekend!
A colorful array of activities for all ages

Even beyond the music, the free & easy has plenty to offer. On the open-air stage, you can enjoy cabaret and talks, which may also address more serious topics such as animal welfare or climate change. You can then put your commitment to sustainability to the test right there at the flea market, which takes place on the first Saturday. There’s also a children’s concert at the opening on July 24, so even the youngest visitors can enjoy the free festival. At Metal Yoga, you can relax and do something good for your body and soul , or you can listen to one of the readings. If you don’t just like to listen but also enjoy watching, the open-air cinema is the place for you. Here you can look forward to various films, including the biggest concert Bring Me The Horizon has ever played, which the band performed in São Paulo.
From July 24 through August 9, you can stop by free & easy every day for 17 days and discover something new each time. To keep you well-fed and hydrated, there’s a beer garden, several snack stands, and seven bars at your disposal. You’re not allowed to bring your own food or drinks, as free & easy is funded exclusively through food and beverage sales. Even though the festival is free, you can still get reserved tickets for the concerts. This guarantees you a standing spot. You’ll also receive drink vouchers for an Augustiner or a Coke. You can find the full program and the exact schedule on the Backstage website.
