After 8 p.m., it’s game over and shopping is no longer possible—that’s what we’re used to here in Munich. But thanks to the new store closing regulation, which has been in effect in the Bavarian capital since early February, up to four exceptions per year are allowed. The first one takes place today, Friday, with the long shopping night in the city center. You can stroll and browse until after 10 p.m., so you can kick off the weekend with an extended shopping spree.
The trial shopping night

Bavaria’s shop closing law is stricter than in most other federal states, where shopping after 8 p.m. is possible without any issues. Only the Saarland has opening hours similar to ours here in the southeast. However, the law does allow for some exceptions, such as special regulations at train stations and airports, as well as a limited number of annual evening openings. A total of eight would actually be possible, but Munich is limiting itself to just four for 2026 on a trial basis.
They want to gain some experience first before fully utilizing the new law. The regulation has been in effect since February 1 and will be tested in practice for the first time this Friday, March 27 . You should take advantage of this opportunity, because the next late-night shopping event won’t be until October.
The city council has decided on the following dates:
- Friday, March 27, 2026
- Friday, October 30, 2026
- Friday, November 27, 2026
- Saturday, December 12, 2026
Shopping in over 50 stores

Across the entire downtown area, 53 stores are open longer than usual for you tonight. By law, they wouldn’t have to close until midnight, but most don’t take full advantage of this and close between 9 and 10 p.m. Only TK Maxx stays open until 11 p.m., and the new Splendid Comics in City Hall even stays open until midnight —as does the Medicus Pharmacy. Still, that gives you plenty of time to shop to your heart’s content. You can find a complete list of all participating stores for Shopping Night here.
In addition to the extended hours, some stores will also feature special events to celebrate the shopping night together. DJs will be spinning tunes for you, there will be fun interactive activities, and the occasional giveaway. At Splendid Comics, artists from the Munich-based Comicaze association will be drawing live for you, and at Hugendubel on Stachus, you can have your initials embroidered onto a cloth bag for free. If you’re coming by car, some parking garages offer one hour of free parking starting at 8 p.m.
