Munich is a city of culture, as evidenced by the many events planned for 2026. And the “Der Blaue Reiter” movement plays a significant role in the city’s art scene. A new exhibition entitled “Beyond the World. Der Blaue Reiter” honors the famous art movement with a new approach—it’s becoming more feminist. The Lenbachhaus has always housed the world’s most extensive collection of Der Blaue Reiter art, but it is currently undergoing renovation. From March 10 , everything will be dedicated to the new Der Blaue Reiter exhibition.
Did you know? The Blue Rider movement describes one of the most important associations of avant-garde artists at the beginning of the 20th century. It includes such renowned names as Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. This circle was founded in none other than this café in Munich! They caused a sensation with their unconventional lifestyles, questioned gender roles, and sought new forms of expression—away from bourgeois norms.
Der Blaue Reiter in 2026: Time for feminism

The new exhibition on Der Blaue Reiter focuses for the first time on the female artists of Der Blaue Reiter: women such as Gabriele Münter, Marianne von Werefkin, Elisabeth Epstein, and Maria Franck-Marc are given significantly more space. Their roles are no longer highlighted as mere companions, but as central figures of modernism.
The fact that we can see all these important works of art today is thanks to one woman. Gabriele Münter hid over 1,000 works in the basement of her house in Murnau during the Nazi era to protect them from the Gestapo. On her 80th birthday, she donated this treasure to the Lenbachhaus.

The new exhibition shows how relevant their questions about emancipation still are today. In addition to the famous major works, many new acquisitions and printsare also on display, which had previously been stored in the depot and are now on public view for the first time.
The new exhibition on Der Blaue Reiter runs from March 10 to September 5, 2027. Tickets are already available for purchase in the Lenbachhaus shop.
