Munich is full of historical places. These include not only the most famous sights, but also smaller hideaways in the middle of our everyday lives. Did you know, for example, that Mick Jagger had a favorite café in Munich? Or that an Art Nouveau library like the one from “Harry Potter” is hidden in the middle of the city? Another place has already made history: Café Luitpold is one of Munich’s most famous and historic coffee houses. It has stood for authentic tradition and high social significance since it was founded in 1888, because it is not just a place for coffee and cake, but a living piece of Munich’s cultural history.
Art at Café Luitpold: where Munich’s high society met

Located in the heart of the city center (Brienner Straße 11), Café Luitpold was once the most popular meeting place for Munich’s high society. This is where high society came together. The café was not only popular with intellectuals, but also with groups of artists. In the end, art history was actually written in Café Luitpold !
The famous artists’ group “Der Blaue Reiter” preferred to meet here. The expressionist artists’ movement was founded in Munich in 1911 by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. Their art became increasingly abstract: they tried out different forms of artistic expression that had never existed before. They exchanged their ideas in the Café Luitpold and revolutionized the art world from here.
And today: between famous history and high-class culture

You can still enjoy food and drink at Café Luitpold today. The in-house patisserie is famous. Classic French and German cakes are particularly popular, but of course the coffee house drinks also take center stage. There are also 100 seats in the light-flooded palm garden.
A unique feature of the café is the small museum inside. It is Munich’s smallest museum with a great experience value and sheds light on the long history of the café. Here you will find exhibits depicting its development since 1888 and stories about visitors from all over the world.
Various events also take place in the “Salon Luitpold”. Visit the weekly jazz breakfast on Sundays or readings and discussions – all in the style of the traditional coffee house: high-class and sophisticated.
