Art and culture are the things that really make life beautiful. Whether it’s a Sunday at the museum, a concert or an evening at the theater, culture brings variety to everyday life and can become a social experience. However, the city of Munich has been making cuts in the cultural sector for years and there is no improvement in sight in 2026. On the contrary, the city is cutting budgets even further. Whether and to what extent this will have an impact is still unclear.
Cultural budget: these institutions have to make savings

Munich’s cultural institutions are to save a total of 18 million euros, the city council has decided. This represents a further increase of one million euros compared to 2025. The city council also decided how the savings would be made up, i.e. which cuts would have to be accepted by which institution. Museums are particularly affected, but also libraries, theaters and music.
The hardest hit are the Kammerspiele, which has to make savings of around 2.6 million euros, and the Stadtmuseum with savings of 1.3 million euros. The Lenbachhaus will have to accept €600,000, the NS Documentation Center €217,000 and the Jewish Museum €116,000. The city libraries and the Isar Philharmonic Orchestra are to save around €500,000 each. In addition, the budget for the promotion of culture itself will be cut by a good €9 million.
A negative signal

Representatives of the affected venues and Munich’s cultural scene are critical of the cuts to Munich’s cultural budget. The city has been on an austerity course in this area for years and funds are becoming increasingly scarce. According to Munich’s head of cultural affairs Marek Wiechers, this should have no impact on the city’s citizens.
The institutions are less optimistic. They have already exhausted a large part of the savings potential. At a certain point, all that remains are program cuts or a reduction in opening days. Above all, it can be assumed that the city’s reduced cultural budget will not change in the coming years. It remains to be seen what effect the savings will actually have.
