There’s something really exciting about theater. Maybe it’s the feeling of immediacy you get when you’re so close to the stage in the smaller theaters. Or maybe it’s the great passion with which both the staff and the performers approach their work – even if in many cases they are not professionals.
There are some small theaters in Munich that may not be among the most prestigious in our city, but for many reasons deserve our full attention. These are, in our humble opinion, the most charming theaters in Munich.
Marionette Theater Kleines Spiel
Marionettes for adults? That may sound contradictory at first, but in truth it’s a simply great combination that has been running since 1947. In this small hall, audiences can enjoy Shakespeare, Brecht and an incredible amount more that they could never have imagined: with wooden marionettes, props and a stage set – made with a love of detail that many a famous theater would wish for.

Blutenburg Theater
“Munich’s Crime Theater” is written on the street sign of this theater in Munich and that’s (almost) all you need to know. Because in the intimate and cozy atmosphere of the Blutenburg, the most dangerous criminals from Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Wallace’s books appear in consistently brilliant adaptations, ranging from the most hilarious comedies to the darkest dramas. No wonder it is almost always sold out.

Mathilde Westend
With only 15 square meters and 17 seats, this is undoubtedly the smallest theater hall in Munich and therefore perhaps not suitable for claustrophobes. But the brilliant performances, the creative staging of strong plays by exclusively female authors and the direct proximity to the stage make a visit a unique experience – moving and educational at the same time.
