Brick walls, high vaulted ceilings, and candlelight—the ambiance in this bar feels almost medieval. In fact, you’ll find yourself comfortably seated in a historic 16th-century brick cellar, sipping rum from limited-edition bottlings. If you’re looking for an exclusive experience, love rum, or need a cozy spot for your next romantic date, you should stop by Campana Del Rey.
Party upstairs, indulgence downstairs
Campana Del Rey is part of the Havana Club at Herrenstraße 30, which has been based here since 1985. Upstairs in the club, you can party the night away with music and cocktails or spend balmy summer evenings in the outdoor seating area. If you prefer a more low-key atmosphere, however, you should head down the stairs to the basement. Until a few years ago, this was the club’s storage room, before it was converted into another bar. Since 2024, you can visit Campana Del Rey here, which, with its somewhat hidden entrance, feels almost like a speakeasy.
The old vaulted cellar near the Isartor is said to have once been part of the city’s fortifications. Today, you can enjoy rum-based drinks here in an atmospheric setting. The room is illuminated by countless pillar candles, some of which have burned down nearly to the bottom. Together with the few spotlights that cast targeted accents of light on the massive brick walls, the Camapana Del Rey has a particularly atmospheric feel. In a central wall niche stands a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It, too, is framed by flickering candlelight, which gives the cellar bar a unique, serene atmosphere.
Rum Takes Center Stage
Campana del Rey’s drink menu places a clear emphasis on rum. Various bottles of the spirit line the bar, flanked by other ingredients for the cocktails. The bartenders prepare the drinks right in front of the guests. Among other things, drinks are served in classic, cut-glass coupette glasses. The alcohol is available here either neat or in long drinks and cocktails such as the Cuba Libre.
The rum here isn’t the usual mass-produced stuff you find in abundance at every other bar or even in stores. Instead, it’s mostly final bottlings from single barrels. That means you won’t find this particular rum anywhere else, and once the last bottle at Campana Del Rey is empty, there won’t be any more. Combined with the hidden entrance, this creates a particularly exclusive bar experience that you won’t find anywhere else in Munich.
