Carnival season is doughnut season. Numerous bakeries, cafés, and pastry shops compete to see who has the best doughnuts in town. They tempt customers with a large selection of different fillings: strawberry, apricot, vanilla, chocolate, and much more. Every year, one café makes it its mission to offer a particularly wide variety of these highly sought-after delicacies. Fresh and homemade every day, you can sample the varied assortment here until Carnival.
Homemade since 1887
Café Kustermann on Lindwurmstraße near Goetheplatz can look back on over 130 years of history. The pastry shop where the pastries and cakes are produced is located in the same building. This ensures that the delicacies are always as fresh as they can be. After closing for renovation work, Café Kustermann reopened in 2025 and has been shining in a new look ever since.
Here you can find a large selection of cakes and tarts that change daily, as well as other sweets. You can also buy pralines or macarons, for example, which you can give as gifts or enjoy yourself. There is also a selection of savory dishes, such as quiche or baguette sandwiches. The weekly menu offers hot dishes for lunch, such as soups, Maultaschen, or Linsendal. During the week, you can also have breakfast until 2 p.m. and on weekends until 3 p.m.

In addition to the delicious pastries and desserts available at Café Kustermann all year round, there are also seasonal specialties such as ice cream in summer and gingerbread and cookies during Advent. At the beginning of the year, in the weeks before Carnival, the long-awaited doughnut season begins. You can buy them spontaneously, but you can also place orders if you want to be sure that your favorite flavor is available. You can place your order by phone or WhatsApp until 4 p.m. the day before and then pick it up the next day.
Café Kustermann is offering a total of 13 varieties of doughnuts this year, eight of which are available every day. The other varieties are only available on certain days of the week, so you’ll either have to be there early or order in advance. These doughnut fillings are available every day this year : apricot, rosehip, plum, strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, pistachio, and yeast dumpling.
There are also changing varieties of doughnuts that you can only buy on certain days of the week:
- Eggnog doughnuts: Mondays, Wednesdays, and from Friday to Sunday
- Cappuccino doughnuts: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays
- Hot love doughnuts (raspberry jam with vanilla cream): always on Tuesdays
- Salted caramel doughnuts: always on Wednesdays
- Pistachio nougat doughnuts: Every Thursday
- Hazelnut doughnuts: Every Friday
If your mouth is already watering, then hurry on over to Café Kustermann. The best way to get to the bakery is by taking the U3 or U6 subway lines. Get off at Goetheplatz and take one of the southern exits, and you’re almost there.
