The Viktualienmarkt is more than just a place full of delicious treats and beautiful souvenirs. Events are held here year-round that keep Munich’s traditions alive—think, for example, of the market women’s dance during Fasching. In the summer, too, tradition is celebrated here with the Brunnenfest. It always takes place on the first Friday in August and honors Munich’s folk singing tradition.
In honor of folk art
There are eight fountains at the Viktualienmarkt, six of which each depict a different local personality. The most famous among them are probably Liesl Karlstadt and Karl Valentin, who even have their own museum at the Isartor. As a comedy duo, the two had the crowds in stitches in the early 20th century.
In honor of them and the other folk artists, the Munich markets host the Brunnenfest. During the festival, the six fountains are colorfully decorated, and there are three stages featuring an entertainment program. You’ll find the stages near the fountains of Liesl Karlstadt, Karl Valentin, and Elise Aulinger. But be sure to also stop by Weiß Ferdl, Ida Schumacher, and Roider Jackl so you don’t miss out on the beautiful decorations.
The program at the Brunnenfest
This year, weather permitting, the Brunnenfest will take place on Friday, August 7, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Seventy artists will delight the crowd with music, dance, and comedy on the three stages. The lineup includes well-known names such as Roland Hefter, the Couplet AG, and the Isar Fischer. Some of the acts wear traditional clothing, which adds another layer of history to their performances. The program is once again a blend of traditional and modern folk art, creating a wonderful symbiosis.
You can also look forward to entertainment offstage. Many of the artists delight crowds with their performances at various spots throughout the Viktualienmarkt.
