After the Perseids, the blood moon is the next astronomical event you will see this year. On the evening of September 7, 2025, the time has come and you can witness the lunar eclipse. Don’t miss out on this spectacle, because the next total lunar eclipse in Germany won’t be until New Year’s Eve 2028!
Blood moon and total lunar eclipse: How does it happen?

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, earth and moon are on the same axis . The Earth moves between the moon and the sun so that the moon enters the Earth’s umbra. You can observe how the moon is slowly overshadowed and becomes a crescent until it is completely in shadow after about three quarters of an hour.
However, it is not completely darkened, but shines 10,000 times weaker than usual, so that you can see the stars around the moon, which it normally outshines. The long-wave red scattered light from the Earth’s atmosphere now illuminates it so that it glows red. The term “blood moon” therefore actually refers to the color, unlike the strawberry moon.
The lunar eclipse and the blood moon in Munich

If you want to watch the spectacle in Munich, then go to your observation post from 19:40, as the moon will rise at this time. The maximum of totality is then reached at 8:12 pm. At this time, the moon is completely in the Earth’s umbra and glows red. Now it gradually emerges from the shadow again and totality ends at 20:53.
To witness the blood moon, it is best to look for a spot from which you have a clear view of the horizon to the east. In Munich, this could be the Fröttmaninger Berg or the Olympiaberg. In good weather with a clear view, you can watch the spectacle from here.
