Have you already planned your vacation for the new year 2026? In any case, it’s worth taking a look at the immediate surroundings this year. The New York Times has published its renowned list of “52 Places to Go in 2026”. And alongside global metropolises such as Bangkok and Barcelona, a small but beautiful city from our Bavaria is also on the list: Bayreuth!
Off to Bayreuth for the festival

The main reason for the nomination is a historic anniversary: in 2026, the Bayreuth Festival will celebrate its 150th anniversary . In 1876, the first festival took place in the Festspielhaus, which was specially designed by Richard Wagner. The New York Times emphasizes that this festival is still “unparalleled” in the opera world today.
The festival is unique in the world because it was the vision of one man: Richard Wagner. He wanted a theater that was radically different from the magnificent buildings of his time and a “festival for the people”. You can still see that today. The Festspielhaus, for example, is built almost entirely of wood and the orchestra sits in a deep pit that is invisible to the audience. As a result, the sound is first reflected onto the ceiling and then into the hall, creating a soft, almost spherical sound.
2026 will therefore be a very special year in Bayreuth. There will be 150 events throughout the year to mark the anniversary – from street art and film music concerts to exhibitions. Traditionally, only the ten major works by Richard Wagner may be performed in the Festspielhaus. But this year, you can also see Wagner’s early work Rienzi for the first time. To open up the anniversary to everyone, there will be a large free open-air concert in the park on July 24.
What makes Bayreuth 2026 special

For travelers who follow the recommendation, the year 2026 in Bayreuth offers much more than just opera. Many local and international associations are planning special events, artist talks and exclusive insights behind the scenes of the festival. Throughout the year, you will find plenty of concerts and lectures that show, for example, how Wagner has influenced modern film music (e.g. Star Wars). It’s worth taking a look at the calendar of events!
Of course, the New York Times also praises Bayreuth ‘s Bavarian culture and famous flair. But the city has thought of other special features for the big anniversary. The Bürgerfest 2026 will be even bigger and the city is also actively promoting its urban art scene and the historic Hermitage Museum as a contrast to the high culture. No matter when you visit Bayreuth this year, the New York Times has given the city its accolade! Bavaria goes international in 2026.
