Have you ever been to Bad Kissingen? This Bavarian spa town is not only known for its fresh air and recreational opportunities, but also holds a special title. Since 2021, the small town has been part of the exclusive circle of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Bad Kissingen is one of the “Great Spa Towns of Europe”! This includes a group of eleven towns in seven countries that represent the heyday of European spa culture. Bad Kissingen has been known for its drinking and bathing cures since the 16th century.
Bad Kissingen, a World Heritage Site?

Bad Kissingen is a prime example in many important respects. UNESCO praises it for its European spa culture between 1700 and the 1930s. But the city is also famous for medical innovation! Mineral springs were used here early on for drinking and bathing cures. Today, the best spas in Munich are inspired by this.
And Bad Kissingen’s urban planning is also impressive. Parks, spa buildings, and therapeutic facilities are perfectly integrated into city life.
Urban planning: Urban planning that perfectly combines parks, spa buildings, and therapeutic facilities with everyday life.
The secret meeting place of the world’s aristocracy

The town’s good reputation preceded it early on. A few decades ago, Bad Kissingen was a meeting place for world politics, nobility, and culture. Personalities such as Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi), Tsar Alexander II, and Otto von Bismarck met here. The latter spent so much time here that he temporarily ran the government from here.
Today’s World Heritage Site encompasses the historic center and the city’s extensive spa facilities. This includes the city’s magnificent concert hall, the Regentenbau, as well as the famous fountain hall, the Arkadenbau. The Wandelhalle is even the largest of its kind in Europe. It was used to allow visitors to take their drinking cure while walking, even in bad weather. The Luitpoldpark, a spacious English garden, is also well worth seeing. It was used in the past for relaxation and exercise in the fresh air.
But of course, the seven healing springs are at the heart of the state spa. To this day, the tradition of “Brunnenausschank” ( spring water serving ) is maintained by Brunnenfrauen (spring women). This makes the medical component of this important world heritage site particularly accessible. Bad Kissingen is so much more than “just” a spa town!
