Munich has many lovely spots where you can relax with a coffee or enjoy a spritz at sunset. And despite the abundance of beautiful places, most of us still end up in the Glockenbachviertel or Maxvorstadt time and again. Sendling, on the other hand, is a place you rarely find yourself in unless you live there. Yet this neighborhood has quite a few culinary highlights that make the trip to the southwest well worth it. One of them is Café Backsteinchen, which reopened this spring and is already an absolute summer hotspot.
First a kiosk, then a motorcycle club
The owners of the Backsteinchen are sisters Laura and Alexa Steinke, who jointly ran Café Steinchen in Laim until 2025. At the same time, the Backsteinchen was established on Luise-Kiesselbach-Platz in a small brick building that used to house a kiosk with a restroom. This served as a shopping spot and restroom for tram passengers. After the kiosk moved out, a motorcycle club set up shop in the building, but they, too, were not to stay. Eventually, the building stood empty, and a call for bids was issued, which the sisters won back in 2022.
Still, it took a while for the city to give its approval. Eventually, however, renovation work could begin, and the owners refurbished the little house. An addition was built to house the restrooms, and a rooftop terrace and a sunroom are set to follow. The Backsteinchen has been open to you since April 2026 and has been a gathering place at Luise-Kiesselbach-Platz ever since.
What Backsteinchen Has to Offer
Right now, you can only sit outside at the Backsteinchen, which makes it the ideal spot for nice weather . Once the sunroom is finished, you’ll be able to enjoy the food and drinks even on rainy days. Right now, you can enjoy the view of the green Luise-Kiesselbach-Platz and its Maypole. You can settle in at one of the small tables or get comfortable in one of the lounge chairs . If you’d like to take your food out to the park, that’s certainly an option, too. The Backsteinchen even offers balls specifically for this purpose—you can borrow them to play with, so your kids can have some fun.
For food, there’s a selection of various homemade cakes as well as light, seasonal dishes. Perfect for summer, they also serve popsicles so you can cool off. The drink menu naturally includes coffee and the obligatory Spritz. But you can also enjoy a Pornstar, an Espresso Martini, and other drinks here—perfect as a sundowner with a view of the greenery. Prices are reasonable, thanks in no small part to the location in Sendling-Westpark, away from the city’s trendy neighborhoods. Cakes cost €4.50 each, a Spritz is €7.90, and Martinis are €9.50. Once the rooftop terrace is set to open next year, the Backsteinchen will be the perfect spot for a Munich summer.
