German movie theaters have recently enjoyed a resurgence in popularity, recording more ticket sales in the first half of 2026 than they have in years. If you, too, have rediscovered your love for the movies—or have long considered yourself a cinephile—then you should mark your calendars for the weekend of September 12 and 13. That’s when the Kinofest takes place throughout Germany, where you’ll pay just €5 for your tickets. Several movie theaters in Munich are also participating and will be showing both current blockbusters and all-time classics.
The participating Munich movie theaters

In Munich, there are several theaters participating in the Kinofest, offering a great selection of films at affordable prices. Pretty much every type of movie theater we have here in the Isar metropolis is represented:
- Multiplex theaters: Royal Filmpalast, CinemaxX, and Mathäser Filmpalast
- Premium Cinemas: Astor Film Lounge at Arri and Gloria Filmpalast
- Alternative Cinemas: Cinema, Cincinnati, and City Atelier
To take part, simply buy a regular ticket for the movie of your choice on either of the two screening days at the respective theaters. It’s best to buy them online in advance, as screenings can sell out quickly.
The program for the Kinofest in Munich

Which movies you’ll get to see at the Kinofest depends on the specific theater. In addition to the latest releases, older classics are also on the program , catering to all age groups. Kids will be thrilled by “Minions + Monsters,” “Paw Patrol,” and “Toy Story 5,” among others. In addition , the Mathäser and the Royal Filmpalast , for example, are hosting a Disney Channel interactive movie experience, featuring not only great stories but also interactive activities. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Astor is screening the first *Shrek* movie—a treat for young and old alike.
If you’re more into the latest blockbusters, “Spider-Man,” “The Odyssey,” or “Michael” are the films of choice—all of which are also playing at the Astor. German films like “A Man from Munich in Heaven,” “Vaterland,” and “The Steckerlfisch Fiasco” are also on the lineup. If you prefer to watch movies in their original language, Cinema München is the place for you, as all films there are shown exclusively in their original audio. Meanwhile, the City-Kinos are hosting the Fantasy Filmfest in parallel with the Kinofest. Films screened as part of the Fantasy Filmfest are excluded from the discount promotion.
