Are you tired of the same old mainstream blockbusters and huge multiplex theaters? Then you should go on a quest for something different in the Gärtnerplatz district. Hidden in an unassuming backyard basement, a true Munich cult cinema awaits you. Since the 1970s, the legendary Werkstattkino has stood for uncompromising cinematic art and a certain touch of nostalgia. As you descend the steps, you enter a world of its own, where true cinephiles will find everything their hearts desire.
A rebellious story in the backyard of a tavern

The history of this unique cinema began back in 1974, when a group of eleven friends converted a little-used bowling alley on Fraunhoferstraße into a creative “cinema workshop.” Over the decades, the arthouse cinema— run by a collective as an association —evolved into an alternative to the mainstream cinema scene, with an underground vibe. Whether it was conflicts with the authorities over provocative films or the successful resistance to plans to close it down, the collective always stayed true to its principles. With its cozy 46 seats, the underground auditorium still has a truly unique charm today.
Curiosities and independent films off the beaten path

The program at the Werkstattkino is simply one-of-a-kind. The collective consistently avoids mainstream fare and instead screens rarities outside the usual cinema repertoire: from horror and sci-fi films to underground and arthouse movies, as well as international film festival entries and special themed weeks focusing on various countries. The films are always shown in their original language with German subtitles.
Special treasures also come from the theater’s own film archive, which contains thousands of 16mm and 35mm reels, with the analog film stock often still being projected just as it was in the old days. Thanks to public funding , the Werkstattkino can offer affordable ticket prices and, by accepting cash payments, not requiring reservations, and holding ad-free screenings, it preserves a wonderfully laid-back, nostalgic cinema culture.
