Munich isn’t just about the chic crowd. The pubs and bars in the city’s few trendy neighborhoods prove this time and again. Very few people ever find their way to the Dreimühlenviertel , and you certainly don’t see any tourists here—and if you do, it’s only for a Weißwurst breakfast at the Augustiner. Yet there are other treasures to discover here, such as the iconic Valentinstüberl.
Access by key only

The Valentinstüberl opened its doors on January 10, 2002, and has been welcoming guests in the Dreimühlenviertel for over 24 years. A figure that owner Jan Oltznauer is proud of, as many other establishments in Munich don’t last nearly as long and have to close. The Valentinstüberl, on the other hand, remains a constant, even if access was more exclusive for a certain period of time.
When the smoking ban was imposed in restaurants in 2008, the bar circumvented the regulation with a clever trick. To get into the Valentinstüberl, you first had to purchase a key for €10 at the Bavarian-Italian restaurant Bavarese across the street. With this key, you could unlock the bar and enjoy your drinks with a cigarette. The owners managed to sell over 2,000 keys. Nowadays, you no longer need one and can visit the Valentinstüberl just like any other bar. However, you’ll have to step outside to smoke.
A pub with a living room vibe
If you’re looking for a chic bar and exclusive cocktails, the Valentinstüberl isn’t the place for you. With its photo wallpaper and beer kegs, the venue exudes a more laid-back charm. Here you can regularly watch soccer games, and in the evenings there’s usually a DJ spinning tunes. The drinks are also top-notch, expertly mixed for you by the friendly staff .
In addition to the usual cocktails, long drinks, and beer, you’ll also find seasonal specials. At the end of March, the “International Egg Liqueur Weeks” begin, getting you in the mood for Easter and spring. You get 20 milliliters for €3, and you can choose between eggnog with grain schnapps, brandy, cherry, or nut. If you’d like to try something different from the usual shots, you should stop by the Valentinstüberl. And also just when you’re in the mood for a cozy bar with friendly staff.
