Munich has many family-friendly museums that parents and children alike enjoy. One of them is undoubtedly the MVG Museum in Ramersdorf, where you’ll not only find exhibits of vintage vehicles but also learn more about the history and technology behind them. This Sunday, a visit is doubly worthwhile, as the MVG Museum is hosting its summer festival and cordially invites you all to join in the fun.
Interactive museum fun
Spanning 5,000 square meters, the MVG Museum offers a glimpse into the history of inner-city public transportation. Throughout the hall, you’ll find 25 vintage buses, subway cars, and trams, most of which were previously housed at the old tram depot on Westendstraße. After the depot was decommissioned, these vehicles found a new home at the MVG Museum, where you can now view them up close. You’ll also learn more about the history of each vehicle. One of the trams is even jacked up so you can take a look at the mechanics underneath.
In addition to the vehicles, you’ll also see the uniforms of MVG employees along with their accessories. You can operate the interactive network map yourself: Enter the desired year and watch the tram and subway network from that time light up before your eyes. At the historic control console, which once stood on Marienplatz, you can test your knowledge with a quiz. And if you’ve always wanted to drive a subway train yourself, hop into the simulator for a virtual ride through Munich.
Summer Festival at the MVG Museum Before the Break
Munich is celebrating 150 years of trams this year, and to mark the occasion, the MVG Museum is hosting its summer festival on Sunday, July 26. As always, you can wander through the hall and check out the exhibits, as well as try out the simulator. But there are also other cool treats in store for you. The ice cream—served in the shape of a heart or an MVG ant—is literally “cool.” Great prizes await you at the wheel of fortune, and you can get all dolled up for the day at the face-painting station. Be sure to pick up a balloon animal and stock up on souvenirs like postcards, T-shirts, or model vehicles.
In August, the MVG Museum takes its summer break and won’t be open again until September. So this weekend is your last chance to stop by for now. Generally, the MVG Museum is only open on select Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. On those days, the special O7 shuttle bus runs from Giesinger Bahnhof, and sometimes the E7 tram runs from Max-Weber-Platz. Unfortunately, the tram service will be suspended for the summer festival.
