In the middle of a green meadow, about an hour south of Munich, stands a structure that resembles a temple more than a traditional art gallery. 121 individually designed columns support a shared roof and bring together contemporary art from around the world. But the history of the STOA169 Foundation in Polling did not begin in Bavaria, but rather more than 35 years ago in India.

An idea from India that didn’t become reality until 30 years later
The story begins in 1990. At that time, the artist Bernd Zimmer was traveling through southern India and was inspired by the artistically designed columns of Hindu temples. His vision: a hall where artists from all over the world could bring their works together under one roof. It wasn’t until 2021 that this dream became a reality in Polling.
No two columns are alike: From colorful sculptures to abstract forms to unusual materials, everything is represented. Together, the works of art symbolize cultural diversity, unity, and peaceful coexistence.

A work of art that can only be reached on foot
STOA169 is located off the beaten path, about a 15-minute walk from the parking lot. What makes it special is that there are no traditional museum galleries here. The art is set amidst nature, is accessible daily from sunrise to sunset, and costs 5 euros for admission or as a donation.
