Fancy an adventure? Then get out of Munich and into the famous Bavarian countryside. Between famous castles and romantic lakes lies a very special lost place. Away from all the tourist trails, hidden in the middle of Forstenrieder Park southwest of Munich, lies the fascinating St. Ulrich’s Chapel in Mühlthal/Königswiesen – also known as the Uhlberg Chapel. This place is much more than just a chapel: it is a special kind of lost place, full of legends, secrets and scary stories.
A mystical lost place in the forest

The Uhlberg Chapel can look back on around 600 years of history. There is evidence of a church being built as early as 1524, but it probably stands on the foundations of an even older predecessor building. In a secluded location in the middle of the densely wooded Forstenrieder Park, it can only be reached on foot or by bike along overgrown forest paths. After the surrounding buildings of Königswiesen were demolished in the 19th century and the area was afforested, the chapel was the last building to be preserved. For a long time, it seemed forgotten and abandoned.
Visitors will not find traditional church information or a signposted parking lot here, but rather the feeling of discovering a real insider tip and enchanted place. Those who set out on the trail of legends and stories will experience a piece of the living past and can feel the magic and horror of past centuries in the shadow of the old walls.
Legends, ghosts and dark stories
The chapel has been the subject of dark legends for centuries: from ghost sightings and black masses to encounters with the “White Lady”. It is said that eerie rituals were performed in this place. Particularly notorious is the legend about a bell sunk in the well and a secret treasure that was supposedly hidden under the altar and could only be retrieved by a “Sunday child”.
As early as the 19th century, the Uhlberg Chapel attracted Romantic painters and poets who felt drawn to the mysterious places in the surrounding area. No wonder, given the inspiring surroundings! Today, urban explorers are attracted by the secluded atmosphere and the hidden traces of times gone by. Officially, however, access to the chapel and the surrounding forest is restricted. The area is a listed building and parts of it are even a nature reserve.
St. Ulrich’s Chapel impresses not only with its age and history, but also with its almost untouched nature. Rare plants, ancient avenues, the remains of Celtic fields and a variety of wild animals can be found around the chapel. The area is therefore of particular cultural and historical value. This makes St. Ulrich’s Chapel the perfect lost place for anyone looking for a real adventure.
