Bavaria’s lake landscapes are notorious. With turquoise blue water like in the Caribbean or thundering waterfalls, the region around Munich can hold its own as a top excursion destination in Germany. But in the midst of all the well-known destinations lies a well-kept secret – even for many locals: the Rose Island in Lake Starnberg. It is the only island in the lake that can only be reached by a small ferry, which gives it a unique exclusivity. Not only its hidden beauty, but also its historic atmosphere make it an unmistakable place.
The extraordinary past of the Rose Island

The heyday of the Rose Island begins with its time as a retreat for King Ludwig II. The Bavarian fairytale king used the idyllic island to escape the pomp and publicity of Munich. And he was particularly fond of this hidden spot on Lake Starnberg. No wonder, as he could spend lonely evenings on the island, occasionally in the company of Empress Elisabeth (“Sisi”) of Austria….
But the Rose Island can look back on even older stories: Archaeological finds prove that the island served as an important place of worship as early as the Bronze Age. Ritual stone circles show its 5000-year history as a spiritual place. Due to these early traces of settlement, Roseninsel is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps”.
In the 19th century, aristocrats celebrated legendary garden parties on the Rose Island, often in strict secrecy and away from the curious public. Even today, only a few tourists usually stray here, so that you can enjoy undisturbed peace and quiet even on summer days. The unique atmosphere and almost untouched nature make the Rose Island such a special place.
Excursion tips on Lake Starnberg

The heart of the Rose Island is the historic rose garden, where more than 30 old and rare rose varieties bloom. It was part of the summer residence of King Ludwig II, as was the elegant pavilion, the so-called “Casino”. Today, the elaborately reconstructed interiors provide an authentic insight into royal life during guided tours.
Ludwig II is said to have dreamed of grand plans for the fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein on the Rose Island. For many, it is still considered a “magical place” today because of its special atmosphere and the fact that it was never permanently inhabited. It is still surrounded by wild nature today. There are many small, hidden bathing spots on the back of the island. However, mooring your own rowing boat outside the official ferry dock is actually prohibited.
Roseninsel is much more than just an excursion destination: it is a living place of history, a natural refuge and a place where fairytale dreams – such as Ludwig II’s of Neuschwanstein Castle – were born. If you are lucky enough to visit this island, you will soon understand why it was so popular as a place of refuge even among kings.
