There’s no question that the nature around Munich is one of the most beautiful spots in Germany. Tranquil lakes, picturesque villages and secret lost places are just waiting to be discovered. But the Munich area also has world records to offer: Burghausen near Munich is the longest castle in the world. At 1,051 meters long, it towers over the listed old town. At this record-breaking building, you can not only visit the impressive complex, but also find real pieces of history and original castle life.
The royal history of the castle

The castle hill was already inhabited in the Bronze and Iron Ages. The area is said to have been continuously inhabited since the 16th century BC. However, the castle itself was first mentioned in 1025. It belonged to the Wittelsbach dynasty from 1180 and was the second residence of the Lower Bavarian dukes for several centuries. Even their treasury was located there!
In the late Middle Ages, the castle was expanded into a mighty fortress and was used for military purposes until the 19th century. The castle complex consists of six courtyards that are strung together like a string of pearls. It is an outstanding example of medieval architecture: the high towers, battlements, moats and walls are perfectly preserved. Today, around 200 people still live on the castle grounds.
What attractions does the castle offer?

The castle is a popular venue for concerts and cultural events. Guided tours are offered throughout the year, providing a vivid insight into medieval life. There are also suitable activities for children: They can listen to ghost stories from the period or carve their own coat of arms into drinking glasses.
There are three museums in total at the longest castle in the world: the City Museum, the House of Photography and the State Collection. There are many hands-on stations so that you can be transported straight back to medieval times. And of course, don’t forget the incredible panoramic view from the viewing platform on the roof of the main castle.
While you’re there, it’s also worth visiting the picturesque town of Burghausen. From the castle, you have the perfect view of the colorful old town. The baroque Raitenhaslach Monastery and the Marienberg pilgrimage church are located in the town. In addition to all the culture, you can also stroll along a craftsmen’s mile or visit the natural bathing paradise of Wöhrsee.
How do I get to the longest castle in the world?

Burghausen is located in Bavaria on the Salzach river, right on the border with Austria. You can easily reach the longest castle in the world by public transport. Take the train from Munich in the direction of Mühldorf and change trains there to get directly to Burghausen. In total, you will need just under three hours for the journey.
It’s quicker by car: you can reach the castle in around an hour via the A94. The castle complex is open all year round and is freely accessible 24 hours a day. The only exceptions are certain events at the castle, such as the castle festival.
