When you think of Munich’s most magnificent churches, the Frauenkirche, the Theatinerkirche, or the Asamkirche in the city center are sure to come to mind first. But a true sacred masterpiece lies hidden off the beaten path in eastern Munich: St. Michael in Berg am Laim. This architectural gem is one of the city’s most significant places of worship and surprises visitors with its breathtaking interior. If you want to enjoy art and history without the usual crowds of the Old Town, you’ll find the perfect spot here for a leisurely exploration.
An impressive Late Baroque construction project

The origins of the Catholic church trace back to an impressive history. The church was built between 1735 and 1751 on the orders of Clemens August I of Bavaria, then Elector and Archbishop of Cologne, and son of Max II Emanuel of Bavaria. To carry out the project, they enlisted none other than master architect Johann Michael Fischer, who designed the church’s late Baroque structure. Incidentally, the church’s forecourt is named after him today in his honor. The church is impressive even from the outside, but its true beauty is revealed only inside.
Inside St. Michael’s, you’ll find authentic Rococo art that is unparalleled. The masterful interior decoration is now considered the absolute masterpiece of South German Rococo. The magnificent decor was co-designed by the famous architect François de Cuvilliés, while the stunning ceiling frescoes are the work of artist Johann Baptist Zimmermann. Thanks to this masterful collaboration among artists of that era, the church interior exudes a special atmosphere. Since the church is located in the quiet Berg am Laim neighborhood, you can usually take in the unique details and the ornate interior in complete tranquility.
