We are already in the final spurt of the Wiesn: the world’s biggest folk festival is only two days away. So far, around 3.6 million people from all over the world have visited the Oktoberfest. Dressed in dirndls and lederhosen, guests start streaming into the festival tents in the morning, which are quickly filled to capacity. There is plenty of partying, drinking and dancing – and plenty of paying!
This year, the Oktoberfest has decided to dig deep into its guests’ wallets! People want to have fun and leave the stress of everyday life behind them for a moment. But when you look at the receipts, some people’ s good mood quickly evaporates. Sure, prices have risen everywhere due to inflation – but so drastically? Many are simply speechless and angry! One receipt in particular from this year is causing a furor online and the discussions about it continue unabated.
Oktoberfest madness
“If the wheat beer costs less than the water, then you were in the wine tent.” These are the words to an invoice that went viral on TikTok from Kuffler’s wine tent on September 26. The invoice amounts to a whopping €919.80, which is almost a month’s rent! Particularly striking on this list is the water, which is even more expensive than the beer: two bottles of water cost €10.90 each, while two wheat beers only cost €8.70. But that’s not all that’s shocking! Three portions of fish and chips cost a whopping €102 and two Wiener schnitzels came in at €76.
The comments under the video reflect the bewilderment of people who find the prices simply outrageous:
“Wiener schnitzel €38? How many square meters was that?”
“I have to get by on €800 and four children for the whole month”
“3 times fish and chips for €103? Did that include the sea?”
“I’d rather go on vacation with my family for that money”
The comments make it clear that this was a group of ten people visiting the Wiesn. But despite this explanation, the more than 1000 reactions under the video show that the high prices, which have long been known, have reached a whole new dimension this year.
