Had enough of Bavarian city life? The most beautiful nature awaits us around Munich. Lakes reminiscent of the Caribbean or castles offering unique panoramic views – there’s plenty to see in our region. One very special place combines not only waterfalls and nature, but also forgotten workshops and traditions. We’re talking about the Schleifmühlklamm gorge on the edge of Unterammergau, which gives you the feeling of having discovered a “forgotten” place in Bavaria.
What makes the Schleifmühlklamm so special

The Schleifmühlklamm gorge is almost hidden between gentle meadows and the mountains of the Ammergau Alps. It is considered one of the lesser-known but all the more fascinating gorges in Bavaria. The approximately 1.5-kilometre-long hiking trail leads along a wild and romantic mountain stream, past roaring water, emerald-green pools and moss-covered rocks.
What makes the Schleifmühlklamm gorge all the more unique, however, is its combination of nature and centuries-old, almost forgotten craft: whetstone making. As early as the 17th century, the people of Unterammergau used the clear water and the geological features of the valley to produce grinding and sharpening stones. These stones were once used throughout southern Germany. The last whetstone workshop closed in the 1960s.
However, the old craft is still alive today: you can still discover the restored grinding mill at the entrance to the gorge. Volunteer villagers demonstrate there every second Saturday of the month from May to September how stones were transformed into precisely shaped tools using water power and muscle work. This traditional production process makes the grinding mill gorge a real experience for technology enthusiasts of all ages.
Nature, tradition and impressive views

The trail in the Schleifmühlklamm gorge is characterized by natural waterfalls, which are particularly impressive in spring. There are seven adventure and information stations along the entire route, which tell exciting nature and craft stories from the gorge. These include a “tree telephone” and the “life path of the stones”.
At the very end of the gorge, impressive quarries await you , which are now a geotope of Bavaria-wide importance: These relics were once an important factor in the region’s industry. It is also worth making a short detour to the viewing platform at the end of the Schleifmühlklamm gorge. Here you can enjoy a special view of the Pulvermoos.
The Schleifmühlklamm gorge is a special excursion tip as it combines tradition, adventure and nature. And unlike its famous neighbors (Partnachklamm, Höllentalklamm), there is no entrance fee! Even on summer days, it is usually pleasantly quiet here. What more could you want from a perfect day trip?
