Turquoise blue water, almost white sandy beaches – if this sounds like a description of the Caribbean, you’re way off the mark: you can find such dreamlike conditions right near Munich! Bavaria has so many beautiful lakes and even waterfalls to offer, which provide the necessary cooling in summer. But this hidden bathing lake near Munich is still a real insider tip. We’re talking about none other than Hollerner See in the north of the state capital. Its nickname: “The Bavarian Caribbean”!
What makes the lake so special?
Hollerner See seems almost unreal. The water is crystal clear and the green-blue color is probably unique in the entire region. There is a simple reason for this perfect water quality: the lake was once a gravel pit. Gravel was dredged here for several decades until there was nothing left to find. The quarry pond then became a bathing lake. And the water still seeps through several meters of gravel layers, which act as a natural filter and clean the lake.
The bathing lake has been officially open since 2020. This is another reason why Hollerner See looks so new and well-kept. The Caribbean atmosphere is definitely there! There are no fish, but you can dive in the crystal-clear water and relax on the sandy beaches over an area of 28 hectares.
What leisure activities does the bathing lake offer?
The hidden bathing lake near Munich has a shallow slope and is therefore ideal for families with children. There are plenty of parking spaces, a water rescue service and sanitary facilities. The operators of the “Hecht und Sonne” kiosk provide refreshments in between. But that’s probably not all: Lake Hollern is set to be expanded even further in the next few years!
And sporting fun is also guaranteed. In addition to the bathing areas, there is also a beach volleyball court, boccia and great paths for walks or bike rides. The entire site is a local recreation area. From various vantage points, you have a view of the neighboring forest area “Mallertshofer Holz”, the heathland south of Eching and the edge of the tertiary hills.
How do I get to this hidden bathing lake?
Hollerner See is located near Eching in the north of Munich. It takes around 30 minutes by car. Follow the A9 to Garching and take the Garching Nord exit.
The journey takes a little longer by public transport, but it is not complicated. Simply take the S1 in the direction of Munich Airport Terminal and get off at Eching. From there, you will have to walk for around 25 minutes, so it will take you just under an hour in total.
This hidden bathing lake near Munich is still a real insider tip. There aren’t many people around the water, so you can spend a relaxing day here undisturbed. And admission is free! Find your spot in the “Bavarian Caribbean” at Hollerner See.
