For nearly 50 years, the same movie has been on the program at a Munich movie theater: *The Rocky Horror Picture Show*. The Museum Lichtspiele has been showing the cult classic every week since June 24, 1977. It is currently showing on Fridays and Saturdays at 11 p.m. in the original English version.
The theater is located at Lilienstraße 2 in Haidhausen, not far from the Deutsches Museum. It was founded in 1910 as “Gabriels Tonbildtheater”; since 1918, it has been known as the Museum Lichtspiele. This makes it the oldest movie theater in the city.

The long Rocky Horror tradition began when the theater revamped its programming in the 1970s. The film became a surprise hit and eventually even inspired its own screening room: Screening Room 2 is furnished with red armchairs. Today, in addition to the cult classic, the four individually designed screening rooms show current films, classics, and productions in their original language, as well as event series such as “kinoundcake.”
So if you’re in the mood for a movie night with an unusually long history, you’ll find it in Haidhausen. The current schedule and tickets are available on the Museum Lichtspiele website.
A perfect complement for fans of eerie stories is the Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy at the Sudeten German House. From November 13 to December 18, this immersive theater experience brings four of Poe’s stories to the stage: “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Black Cat,” “The Raven,” and “The Masque of the Red Death.” The event, which lasts about 75 to 80 minutes, is for ages 18 and up; themed cocktails and mocktails are available as add-ons.
