A huge burning cauldron in the middle of the city – undoubtedly a spectacular sight. If you’ve had enough of hot chocolate and mulled wine, you should make a detour to Munich’s Feuerzangenbowle. You can usually find it at the Isartor, but this year it had to move due to construction work. We reveal below when and where you can try the classic hot drink this year.
A custom-made version of the original

Since 2005, Munich has been able to call itself the home of the world’s largest Feuerzangenbowle. The kettle is custom-made from stainless steel with a copper look. It is 3.4 meters high, 2.5 meters wide and has a capacity of 9,000 liters. A solution was devised with Stiebel Eltron to keep the liquid in a container with this volume at a constant temperature of 70° C. It takes 48 hours for the kettle and its contents to reach operating temperature before you can finally enjoy Munich’s Feuerzangenbowle.
This year, the base wine for the punch is a cuvée of Lemberger, Portugieser, Pinot Noir and Schwarzriesling. The sugar loaf, soaked in rum and placed on the tongs that give the punch its name, is burnt on top. The sugar caramelizes and drips into the kettle, so that sugar, rum and wine form a unique taste experience. People have been drinking Feuerzangenbowle, also known as “Krambambuli” in the student fraternities of the 19th century, for 200 years.

Munich’s Feuerzangenbowle was the first to offer the popular drink in this form. It can now also be admired in Nuremberg near the Christkindlesmarkt and at the Cologne Christmas market, where the kettles have the same dimensions. Munich’s Feuerzangenbowle therefore has to share the title of the world’s largest Feuerzangenbowle, but it remains the original.
From the very beginning, the Isartor was the place where the Munich Feuerzangenbowle was served. Due to construction work, it had to move to the Schrannenhalle in Blumenstraße this year. You can still drink it there until the beginning of January, and on New Year’s Eve even until 3 am. You can make yourself comfortable here on the numerous seats or choose one of the bar tables while you feel the radiating warmth of the giant kettle on your face. To make sure you get a seat, you can book online in advance, or even host a party if required.
