Although Munich isn’t located by the sea, it still has a large surfing community. Thanks to the legendary Eisbach wave, the Bavarian capital is known around the world as a surfing spot. This made the wave’s disappearance last year after the stream receded all the more tragic. Fortunately, it’s back now— but just in case it should disappear again, there’s a great alternative. O2 Surftown MUC in Halbergmoos lets you surf any time of year, no matter your skill level.
A surf park built to the latest standards
O2 Surftown has been around since August 2024 and is unique in Germany. Unlike other German surf parks, it features a moving wave rather than a stationary one. The operators’ goal was to simulate surfing just like at the ocean. The system has various modes, allowing it to adapt the waves to the needs of the surfers. This creates point break, A-frame, and air waves.
The system can also generate a wave up to 2 meters high with a 25-second ride length —the longest artificial wave on the continent. With its 10,000 m² wave pool, O2 Surftown is the largest park of its kind in Europe and the training facility of the German Surfing Association. It’s open year-round, weather permitting. So you don’t have to wait until your next vacation to hit the water with your board again.
O2 Surftown is for everyone
Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned pro, everyone is welcome at O2 Surftown. Kids ages 6 and up can take their first attempts on a board here and receive instruction in small groups. During summer vacation, there are also special courses your kids can take—ideal if you’re not heading to the beach this year or prefer a safer environment. But even adults who are complete beginners can discover surfing here and take their first steps. Depending on your skill level and the session, the system configures the right waves for you.
But even if you don’t want to surf yourself, a visit to O2 Surftown is well worth it. For just €5, you can get a visitor pass and make yourself comfortable on the rooftop terrace or the sunbathing lawn. Here, you can relax just like you’re at the beach and watch the surfers. You can even visit the restaurant and terrace without a pass and enjoy delicious bowls, burgers, and salads. You can easily reach O2 Surftown by S-Bahn, bus, or MyRadl. For drivers, there’s on-site parking.
