The city on the Isar and the surrounding Munich area have some wonderful Christmas markets to offer in November and December. But now there’s news for all fans of the Advent season. If you’re already looking forward to fragrant mulled wine, roasted almonds, and the enchanting setting at the New Town Hall, you can look forward to an extended festive season this year. That’s because Munich’s municipal Christmas market at Marienplatz will start earlier in 2026 than in previous years. This year, the world-famous Christmas market will open on the Friday before All Souls’ Day—that is, from November 20 through December 24, 2026. The city on the Isar invites you to enjoy even more festive winter days in the heart of this metropolis, around Marienplatz and in the pedestrian zone.
137 stalls, a huge nativity scene market, and Bavarian traditions

At this traditional market—whose roots date back to the 14th century and which has been held at Marienplatz since 1972—a total of 137 merchandise and food stalls await you this year. In addition to classic dishes, punch, and mulled wine, you can also look forward to a diverse selection of vegan food. Those looking for handmade Christmas gifts and decorations will also find everything their hearts desire.
An absolute highlight against the backdrop of the Alter Peter is the large Munich Nativity Scene Market. Independent nativity scene markets have been held in Munich since 1757. Here you’ll find complete large-scale nativity scenes in Oriental and Alpine styles, delicate figurines, carved stable scenes, and even gifts for the Three Wise Men.
A diverse program: From the Krampus parade to the “Himmelswerkstatt”

Even beyond the market stalls, the Munich Christmas Market offers an unforgettable program of events:
- Advent music from the City Hall balcony: Every day, brass ensembles, choirs, and folk musicians provide live musical entertainment, ranging from Christmas classics to jazz.
- The spectacular Krampus Parade: Around 300 Krampuses, Perchten, and Klause parade through the city center during this eerily beautiful highlight.
- Heavenly Workshop for Kids: In the festively decorated Ratstrinkstube, kids ages six to twelve can dress up as little angels and do crafts for free.
- Singing Under the Christmas Tree: Once a week, Traudi Siferlinger invites everyone to the Alter Peter for a communal, inclusive sing-along of Bavarian Advent carols.
📍 Location: At Marienplatz and in the pedestrian zone
🗓️ Hours: The Christmas market is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sundays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on December 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
