The History of Lake Starnberg
Lake Starnberg fascinates not only with its stunning natural landscape but also boasts a dramatic history. In 1886 , King Ludwig II met with an accident here and drowned under unexplained circumstances. To this day, a memorial cross in the middle of the lake and a nearby votive chapel serve as reminders of the “Fairy-Tale King’s” tragedy.
Another famous historical figure also left her mark on Lake Starnberg. Empress Sisi grew up in the idyllic Possenhofen Castle before her wedding and, even back then, gazed out from there at the lake’s unique scenery.
Tips for getting there from Munich
🚂 The S6 S-Bahn takes you from Munich Central Station to Starnberg in about 35 minutes, to Possenhofen in about 40 minutes, and to the Tutzing terminus in about 45 minutes. With the Regiobahn, it takes less than 20 minutes to get from Central Station to Starnberg.
🚗 Via the A95 and A952 highways, you’ll reach Starnberg in about 25–30 minutes and roughly 25–30 kilometers.
