If you’re looking for an impressive destination near Munich, you should definitely head to the town of Haag in Upper Bavaria. There you can see a fascinating historic fortress: Haag Castle, also known as Haag Palace. This historic landmark towers over the historic town square and boasts a history stretching back centuries. The imposing castle tower, in particular, will amaze you even from a distance. Standing a stately 42 meters tall, with its striking 15th-century corner turrets and three-meter-thick walls, it immediately captivates every visitor. If you love hidden, historic places and are in the mood for interesting discoveries, this is the perfect spot for you!
A Journey Through the Centuries: From Nobles, Counts, and Duchies

The origins of the castle complex date back a long way. It is believed that the noble family “de Haga” built the castle in the 12th century. Later, the complex passed to the Fraunberger family, a line of ministerials who shaped the region and were eventually elevated to the rank of counts in 1509. Even today, you can admire the Fraunberg coat of arms at the top of the tower: a white horse on a red background. Later, the Bavarian dukes of the House of Wittelsbach took over the rule.
The castle also endured difficult times: Demolition work began in 1804, and a fire in 1849 caused severe damage. Despite these incidents, the mighty curtain wall, the old gate tower, and the beautiful grand staircase from 1748 —along with the historic Lion Bridge —have been preserved. An interesting fact: During the Baroque period, the old moat was even used as a private menagerie.
