Who among you doesn’t love a relaxing day trip from Munich to the “Bavarian Sea”? It was all the more painful for many when the traditional Gasthaus zur Linde on the picturesque Fraueninsel in Lake Chiemsee unexpectedly closed its doors at the end of 2025. But now there’s fantastic news for your next trip to the island! The Bavarian Palace Administration has officially re-leased the approximately 600-year-old property. An experienced couple in the restaurant business is taking the reins to reopen the historic inn right next to the famous monastery complex and turn it into a real highlight for locals and visitors alike.
A special place with 600 years of history right in the heart of Lake Chiemsee

This historic inn isn’t just any place to stop for a bite to eat—it’s a place steeped in tradition. As early as the 19th century, the Gasthaus zur Linde served as the central gathering place for the Frauenwerth artists’ colony, where landscape painters would come together. Located on Fraueninsel, an island spanning approximately twelve hectares, the inn can accommodate up to 160 guests indoors, an additional 160 in the banquet hall, and around 300 in the spacious beer garden. After more than 20 bids, Stefanie Häußer-Wehr and Harry Häußer were awarded the contract for this special retreat.
Here’s what you can look forward to starting next spring

The new tenants previously successfully ran the “Alte Säge” on the Traun River in Ruhpolding and are bringing a lot of passion to Lake Chiemsee. The new lease officially begins on November 1, and the couple has big plans. You can look forward to high-quality Bavarian cuisine, refined with fresh, modern ideas without losing its traditional essence. The classic beer garden will also remain. The property will be complemented by stylish hotel rooms, which the tenants are refurbishing. Although a specific date cannot be given yet, if everything goes according to plan, you can look forward to the grand reopening as early as this spring!
