During the summer, most Munich residents head out on weekends primarily to the numerous swimming lakes in the surrounding area. But you can also cool off in other ways, such as on a hike through a shady gorge. The Eistobel is the perfect spot for this, as it offers plenty of variety on a loop trail that’s suitable for all ages.
Ice Age Gorge
The name alone promises a refreshing escape: The Eistobel was formed about 15,000 years ago by meltwater following the end of the last Ice Age. Today, the waters of the Upper Argen rush through the gorge in several cascades. This creates whirlpools and pools where the water collects. The rock walls rise up to 130 meters on either side of you, forming an impressive backdrop.
Along the trail, you’ll encounter several small waterfalls and, finally, the large waterfall that plunges 18 meters into the depths. Also, keep an eye out for the dipper, the only songbird in Europe that can swim and dive. The trail through the Eistobel stretches 3.5 kilometers, ultimately leading you to a reservoir where the Upper Argen River collects in a basin. Behind it, a 50-meter-high Nagelfluh cliff rises up, offering you a breathtaking view.
Hiking in the Eistobel
You’ll start your hike at the Eistobel Bridge, where an information center awaits you right away. Here you can learn more about the geology and the formation of the gorge before setting off. You can tackle the trail on your own, or join a guided tour through the Eistobel. The hike is suitable for children as young as four, as the trail is fairly easy to navigate. Nevertheless, you should definitely wear sturdy shoes.
Even though the Eistobel owes its name to the frozen waterfalls that transform the gorge into a wonderland of icicles, you unfortunately can’t see the spectacle for yourself, as the trail remains closed in winter. In summer, however, you can stop by every day between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and enjoy the wild waters. Admission is €3.50 for adults and €1.50 for children; parking, however, is free.
