A tour on a double-decker bus is one of the classic ways to explore a city. As a local, you’d of course never set foot on such a bus —but luckily, you don’t have to. There’s actually a much cooler way to explore Munich on wheels: Dinner Hopping. You’ll cruise through the city in a yellow American school bus, which doubles as an extraordinary restaurant. If you’re in the mood for a unique combination of sightseeing and a culinary adventure , you should hop on the Dinner Hopping school bus.
From Driving School to BusBar

The history of Dinner Hopping begins in 1922 near Freising, when Hans Fragner became the first in his family to get his driver’s license and landed a job as a private chauffeur. Later, he worked as a driving instructor in Erding and eventually founded his own driving school. This laid the foundation for the family’s passion for driving and vehicles. His grandchildren later took over the driving school and, in 1994, purchased an American Freightliner truck , which they converted. It was used both at the driving school and at events.
Ten years later , they acquired their first school bus, which they turned into a mobile bar. Demand was high, so they needed another bus, which offered the first Dinner Hopping tour in 2005. Due to its great success, the fleet continued to grow, and Dinner Hopping was offered in various cities across Germany . In Munich, the yellow bus runs several days a week and takes you on a unique tour that you can enjoy privately, as a group, or together with other passengers.
Here’s what you’ll experience on a Dinner Hopping tour
The basic concept is simple: You hop on the bus, stop at several restaurants along the way, and have your three-course meal served right on the bus. You’ll pass by various Munich landmarks, so you can enjoy your meal with a view. When you book, you can choose in advance between a Bavarian, Italian, American, or Asian menu. Vegetarian options are always available, and vegan dishes are also offered upon request. In addition to the meal, you’ll also select a beverage package, which can include or exclude alcohol. The tours last about three hours and start and end in a central location in the valley.
If sightseeing while dining in a school bus isn’t exciting enough for you, you also have the option to enjoy a live musical performance on board or be enchanted by a magic show. And if you’re short on time, simply choose the Bavarian Lunch, where you’ll be on the move at lunchtime and enjoy a main course and dessert. Dinner Hopping is ideal for corporate events, birthdays, or bachelor/bachelorette parties, where you’ll have the bus all to yourselves. But even if you just want to experience a slightly different kind of restaurant visit or are still looking for a cool date idea, Dinner Hopping is the perfect choice.
