No matter how many great cafés there are in Munich, it simply tastes best at Grandma’s. That’s what a very special place in our metropolis on the Isar has thought: Kuchentratsch. This café at Theresienhöhe 30 is a social bakery where senior citizens bake cakes according to their traditional, handed-down recipes. Not only does it look like grandma and grandpa’s, it actually is!

Kuchentratsch was founded in 2014 and aims to make the lives of senior citizens more enjoyable. They are offered a meaningful activity and become part of a community while baking.
The grandmas and grandpas work on a mini-job basis, for example a four-hour shift once a week, and can thus earn some extra money towards their pension. But it’s mainly about social interaction: the bakery is a place to feel good, talk, exchange ideas and make friends. For some, it is a “second home” or helps them not to fall into the loneliness of being a pensioner.
Grandpa Günter’s cake in a living room atmosphere

You’ll find lots of different cakes at Kuchentratsch. All of them are based on tried-and-tested recipes developed by the senior citizens themselves. Even if you can bake delicacies such as cinnamon buns at home, the experience of the bakers at Kuchentratsch makes them a real masterpiece. Try Grandpa Günter’s cheesecake or Grandma Hilde’s lemon poppyseed cake, for example.
In the café, you can watch the grandmas and grandpas baking in the open bakery. They create vegan cakes, birthday cakes and classic pastries. You can enjoy the specialties either directly in the café with a cosy living room atmosphere. Or you can order the cakes directly to your home.
Because another concept makes Kuchentratsch so unique: in the Munich area, you can have the cakes delivered to your home by the so-called “delivery grandpas ” (and possibly also grandmas). Otherwise, the cakes and pastries are sent by post throughout Germany. Complete with a personal greetings card – the perfect surprise for special occasions. Just “like grandma’s”.
