There are quite a few beautiful lakes around Munich that draw us in on hot summer days, such as Lake Wörth or Lake Karlsfeld. But if you’ve ever had your fill of these (hard to imagine, we know), then it’s nice to venture a little further afield. In the Karwendel, for example, Lake Barmsee beckons — it captivates visitors not only with its scenic location but, above all, with its tranquility . If you’re looking to relax thoroughly, this is the place for you.
Idyllic lake in the Karwendel
Lake Barmsee is the largest lake in the Karwendel Alpine World and is located near Krün and Wallgau, close to Garmisch-Patenkirchen. Although it lies 885 meters above sea level and is up to 30 meters deep, it can still reach pleasant temperatures of up to 24°C in the summer. This makes it about as warm as the nearby Lake Geroldsee. This makes the Barmsee an ideal destination for a summer swimming trip.
Although most of the shoreline is a nature reserve, there’s a swimming area in the northwest where you can take a dip. There are also restrooms nearby in case you need to use the facilities. The wonderfully clear water and the stunning view of the surrounding Alps invite you to enjoy a wonderful summer swim. And since there are no cars up here, you’ll enjoy even more peace and quiet.
How to get to Lake Barmsee
Unlike other swimming lakes, there’s no direct access to Barmsee, so you can’t reach it by car. Instead, you’ll need to hop on a bike or set out on foot. It’s best to park your car in Krün and start your journey from there. If you’re starting from the Barmsee district, keep in mind that you’re not allowed to ride a bike to the lake from there.
If you’re already traveling by foot, you can head straight out on a hike. For example, walk around the Barmsee and enjoy the views of the Karwendel and Wetterstein Mountains from every possible angle. Or set out on the Three-Lakes Hiking Trail and visit the Geroldsee and Grubsee as well. Depending on the season, different flowers bloom in the alpine meadows, transforming them into a magnificent sea of blossoms. Whether crocuses, gentians, or orchids, you’ll be treated to a wonderful display of colors throughout the year. And in winter, the area is perfect for cross-country skiing.
