There are quite a few movie theaters in Munich: from modern multiplexes to more alternative venues, film fans of every genre will find something to their liking in our city. If you’re looking to treat yourself to a particularly upscale movie-going experience, head to the Gloria Palast on Karlsplatz. Normally, this upscale experience comes at a price that not everyone can or wants to pay. If you’ve always wanted to visit this theater but were previously held back by financial constraints, now is the perfect opportunity. This July, the Gloria Palast is celebrating its 70th anniversary and is inviting you to a screening for just 7€ to mark the occasion.
Water Features at the Movie Theater

After the end of World War II, film producer Ilse Kubaschewski founded Gloria Film GmbH in Munich, which quickly became Germany’s largest film distributor at the time. Shortly thereafter, she turned her dream of owning her own movie theater—one that would embody her ideals—into reality. In 1956, the time had finally come, and the Gloria Palast opened its doors at Stachus.
At the time, it was considered the most modern movie theater in Munich, exuding a touch of luxury with its fountain show. Before every screening, water fountains shot up in front of the screen in time with the music . They were controlled by an organ and illuminated with colored lights. Unfortunately, this spectacle no longer exists today, but back then it was reason enough to visit the Gloria. Thanks to its elegant decor and upscale ambiance , the Gloria became a popular venue for premieres, attracting stars from all over the world.
