Munich is home to many stylish cafés that feature modern interiors where every detail is carefully coordinated. And then there are cafés like the Trachtenvogl, which are the exact opposite—and are therefore hugely popular. Despite its continued popularity, owner Christian Ohlmann has now decided to close his café. A successor has already been chosen: a vegan restaurant chain is moving in.
From wild nights to a cozy brunch spot
Until 2003, the traditional clothing store Vogl was located at 47 Reichenbachstraße in the Glockenbach district and gave its name to its successor. The Trachtenvogl was initially a bar where people partied late into the night. However, with the smoking ban in 2012, revelers took their celebrations out onto the street, much to the annoyance of local residents. The Trachtenvogl responded with a new concept. The bar was transformed into a café with its own kitchen, serving breakfast, cakes, snacks, and daily specials. Thanks to its casual atmosphere and cozy interior featuring sofas and armchairs, the Trachtenvogl continued to enjoy great popularity and became a cult café.
And yet, owner Christian Ohlmann decided to close Trachtenvogl. The staff has known about it since the summer, and now he has publicly announced the closure on the café’s website. Although business is going well, he wants to shut down the operation so he can spend more time with his loved ones. He doesn’t yet know what the future holds for him personally. However, the future of Trachtenvogl is already set.
The End of Café Trachtenvogl

Trachtenvogl will remain open for you until December 30. So make the most of the next few weeks to pay one last visit to this Munich institution before it closes its doors for good. But even though the café’s closure may be sad news for many, you can look forward to something new. In early 2027, the space on Reichenbachstraße will be renovated, followed by the opening of a Kaspar Schmauser branch in March.
The vegan restaurant chain already has locations in several German cities, including Nuremberg, Erlangen, and Fürth. Now Munich is joining the list as another Bavarian location and will soon be able to enjoy delicious bowls, curries, and desserts. Until then, enjoy a few last wonderful hours at Trachtenvogl.
