Munich is a sports city where, in addition to the Olympics and track and field, soccer is, of course, firmly established. With FC Bayern Munich, the Bavarian capital can already boast of being home to Germany’s record-holding champion and record-holding cup winner. As of yesterday, the nation’s sports club with the largest membership can now also celebrate having the Player of the Year on its roster. On the evening of October 26, Harry Kane accepted the 2026 Ballon d’Or, officially making him the world’s best male soccer player of the past season.
The highest honor

Even though Harry Kane was denied both the World Cup title and the Champions League trophy this year, the British-born player can still look back on a successful season. The striker scored a total of 61 goals for Bayern Munich and twelve more for the English national team. This achievement was now honored at the 70th Ballon d’Or in London, where he was named “World Soccer Player of the Year 2026.” This marks the first time since 1996 that the award has gone to a Bundesliga player. Back then, Mattias Sammer of BVB accepted the trophy.
The Ballon d’Or is considered the highest individual honor for a professional soccer player. It is awarded by the French soccer magazine “France Football,” with a jury consisting of sports journalists. For several years now, there has also been the Ballon d’Or Féminin to recognize the achievements of female players as well. This year, the award went to Spain’s Alexia Putellas, who signed with the London City Lionesses earlier this year.
