The Old Roses of Trostberg
The Trostberg Rose Garden is located below Schedling Castle and was created from the old monastery garden. Twenty-five years ago, the city planted the first rose there with the aim of preserving and conserving historic rose varieties that once climbed up the old walls. Marita Protte, a resident of Trostberg, dedicated herself to this task and, within three years, transformed the site into the rose garden we see today.
It celebrated its opening in 2004 and has since grown to include 200 varieties of roses. Unlike many modern varieties, the old roses have a particularly intense fragrance because they haven’t been overbred. In June and July, during the peak blooming season, you’ll find a colorful sea of flowers here, exuding its sweet fragrance from every direction. With the castle as a backdrop, you’ll almost feel like you’re in the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty.
The Trostberg Rose Garden as a Diverse Habitat
The Trostberg Rose Garden covers over 3,000 square meters and is worth a visit not only during the rose-blooming season. At the end of winter, snowdrops push their white heads out of the ground, and the spring rose heralds the arrival of spring. In the fall, you can enjoy the asters. The meadows, shrubs, and rocks provide a habitat for all kinds of wildlife, which calls the old found roses home and can thrive here in peace alongside them.
The Trostberg Rose Garden invites you to stroll and linger all year round with its tables and benches, making it the ideal place to unwind a bit. Of course, it’s most beautiful here during the roses’ blooming season. In addition, the Rose Festival takes place every two years, where you can enjoy cake and purchase cuttings.
