After a visit to the beautiful Christmas markets, our bellies are usually satisfied, but our wallets are much lighter. Of course we want to treat ourselves during the festive season and take care of our well-being. A trip to the Christmas market with our loved ones means grabbing something warm to escape the cold. And at the top of the list is delicious mulled wine, which can cost up to €6 at some Munich markets. Add to that a bratwurst in a roll for €5 and roasted almonds for €4.50 – and you’ve got quite a lot.
The cheapest Christmas market in Germany
Aldi Süd doesn’t want to stand idly by and has launched an inexpensive Christmas market alternative that has already been launched in three German cities and is now coming to Munich. With mulled wine (also non-alcoholic) and bags of cookies for €1 each as well as crêpes and bratwurst for just €2, the discounter describes itself as “the cheapest Christmas market in Germany”. The stalls are simply set up in the parking lots of various Aldi stores.
Munich is known to be one of the most expensive cities in Germany, especially when it comes to rents and the cost of living, where the Bavarian metropolis is at the top of the list. The high prices at the Christmas markets during the festive season are therefore rather inconvenient, which is why Aldi Süd also wants to “set an example” in Munich. The aim is to create an “affordable Christmas season for everyone”.
All food and drinks will be prepared with own-brand products and the proceeds will go to the Off-Road Kids Foundation. This foundation is committed to helping young homeless people in Germany. This both affordable and charitable Christmas market will take place from November 12 to 14 at Zielstattstraße 73, from 3 to 9 pm. Even if it doesn’t last as long as the traditional markets, it is definitely worth a visit with its fair alternative! After all, isn’t it much nicer to save our money for a special gift for our loved ones?
