We Munich residents are known to appreciate our city not least because of its proximity to nature. If you can’t decide between a lake or the mountains for your next outing, then Taubensee near Reit am Winkl is the perfect destination for you. Here you can combine a day of hiking with swimming fun and enjoy the wonderful scenery on your way up. You can also take a short detour into the neighboring country from here.
Hike to the mountain lake
Lake Taubensee is located in the Chiemgau Alps at an elevation of 1,138 meters, making it one of the highest lakes in Germany. It owes its nickname, “Eye of Chiemgau,” to its location. Its actual name, in turn, derives from the crayfish that live in Lake Taubensee and are known locally as “Daubbn” or “Daupn.”
Unlike the Eibsee at the Zugspitze, it is far less crowded, which is likely due in no small part to the fact that you can only reach it on foot or by mountain bike. Accordingly, you should be in good physical condition if you decide to visit Taubensee. Furthermore, sturdy footwear is an absolute must, and you should be sure-footed .
Lake Taubensee: Across Borders

The state border with Austria runs right through the middle of Lake Taubensee, and the body of water is divided equally between the two countries. While swimming in the lake, you can easily cross the border into Tyrol or Bavaria, depending on which side you’re coming from. That’s because you can access it from both the German and Austrian sides.
If you’re starting in Bavaria, Reit im Winkl is a good starting point. From here, you can take the hiking bus to Streichen and then cover the rest of the route on foot. Along the way, you’ll find two alpine huts where you can stop for a break: the Hutzenalm and the Stoibenmöseralm. Near the lake , you’ll also find the Taubenseehütte, where you can refuel with Tyrolean cuisine after your hike. This way, you’ll be rewarded twice for your efforts: with the beautiful view of the mountains and the lake, and with a good meal.
