Thanks to its S-Bahn connection to Munich, the Five Lakes Region is a popular destination for city dwellers and, in addition to the lakes that give it its name, offers plenty more to discover. Alongside the charming villages and small towns, the region also boasts several architectural gems, such as the Votive Chapel or Andechs Monastery. Castle enthusiasts will also find plenty to enjoy, for example at Possenhofen or Seefeld. The latter is one of the largest and most significant complexes in the Five Lakes Region and offers a wide range of cultural activities. Find out what you can do at Seefeld Castle.
A tranquil Baroque building

An early fortification on the spur above Lake Pilsen likely existed as early as the 11th century. Over time, the complex evolved and underwent repeated renovations and additions. In the 15th century, the Count of Toerring-Jettenbach acquired Seefeld Castle, which remains in his family’s possession to this day. It acquired its current Baroque appearance in the 18th century; further construction phases took place in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The complex consists of several buildings, including a castle chapel with Baroque furnishings. The defensive tower has a medieval character thanks to its battlements, and the arcaded structure replaces the former orangery. The castle park and the monastery garden are wonderful places to take a stroll and enjoy the view over Lake Pilsen. If you’re already here, you should also visit Lake Pilsen itself. When the weather is nice, you can sip drinks at the beach and cool off in the water.
Leisure at Seefeld Castle

Seefeld Castle is still largely inhabited today, which is why you cannot tour the interior. However, cultural events are held regularly, allowing you to enter the hallowed halls—at least partially. Concerts, cabaret, and readings await you in the Old Brewhouse. You can find the current program here. You can find even more entertainment at the Arthouse Kino Breitwand, which was even named Germany’s best cinema in 2014. In addition to arthouse films, you can also watch the latest blockbusters in the two theaters.
If you’re in the mood for even more art, stop by the small studios in the castle courtyard and admire the works of local artists. Or browse through the displays in the boutiques and shops. Last but not least, stop by the Bräustüberl, where you can enjoy Bavarian cuisine either in the cozy dining rooms or outside in the beer garden. You can reach Seefeld Castle from Munich by taking the S8 toward Ammersee or in about 35 minutes by car.
