It’s not just in summer that you can enjoy great hiking around Munich. It’s also possible in winter – even if many hiking trails are buried in deep snow. But very special natural spectacles are all the more worthwhile now. Because when the temperatures are cold enough and the water freezes, a true natural wonder comes to life in Garmisch-Partenkirchen: the Partnach Gorge. As soon as frost has a firm grip on the Alps, the wild gorge transforms into a glittering world of ice and silence.

This magical experience is only possible now in winter! The seepage water that drips down the rock faces in summer freezes in frost to form huge icicles several meters long. These hang down from the cliffs like heavy crystal chandeliers, forming a kind of “ice cathedral.” You can hike through it on narrow paths carved into the rock.
It is a surreal backdrop that will immediately captivate you. While the river roars below you, you walk along beneath the frozen ice. Over centuries, powerful masses of water have hollowed out the rocks through which you walk. The play of colors and natural spectacle are breathtaking!

A walk through the winter gorge is an experience for all the senses. The acoustics are unique, because under the ice cover, the sound of the Partnach is more mysterious than in summer. The light refracts in millions of ice crystals and makes the ice walls in the gorge sparkle.
Getting there is easy. From Munich, you can reach Garmisch-Partenkirchen in about an hour by car or train. From the ski stadium, it’s about a 20-minute walk to the entrance of the gorge. But be careful:the paths in the gorge can be extremely slippery. Sturdy shoes are a must, and small crampons (spikes) for the soles are highly recommended in winter.
The gorge is open daily in winter, but may be closed at short notice in extreme weather conditions or if there is a risk of falling ice. The paths are usually gritted when icy. It is always worth checking the official website before setting off.
