The selection of picturesque villages and old towns in the wider area around Munich seems almost endless. In addition to the well-known destinations, there are also numerous charming towns that most day-trippers don’t even know exist. Among these hidden gems is Moosburg an der Isar in the Freising district. This tranquil little town captivates visitors not only with its unique location but also with its beautiful old town.
Over a millennium of history

Moosburg an der Isar is considered the oldest town in the Freising district, with the first traces of settlement dating back to prehistoric times. The name “Mosabyrga” was first mentioned in a document in the year 770 and referred to the local monastic settlement. Two of the monks from the Benedictine monastery, Albin and Rhenobot, brought the relics of Saint Kastulus from Rome to Moosburg. His remains were housed for a long time in St. Kastulus Cathedral, which was consecrated around 1212 and remains a landmark of the city to this day. However, most of Kastulus’s remains are now located in Landshut.
Unique location

Moosburg lies virtually on the border between Upper and Lower Bavaria, right on the edge of the Hallertau region, which is why it is considered the gateway to the Hallertau. Although the name might suggest otherwise, Moosburg is situated not only on the Isar but also on the Amper. The latter flows into the Isar north of Moosburg. To the south, the Amper Overflow Canal connects the two rivers, so that the town is completely surrounded by water and forms a sort of island. The Mühlbach and Schleiferbach streams also flow through the town, along with other small canals and waterways. Together with the small, winding alleys, they give Moosburg a special charm and invite visitors to take a stroll.
During your visit, be sure to stop by St. John’s Church in addition to the majestic Kastulus Cathedral. Both churches are located close to each other and feature similar towers of equal height, which makes them look like a cathedral from a distance. The neo-Gothic town hall on the town square is also a real eye-catcher, and the Marian Column can be found here as well. In some places, you can still discover remnants and reconstructions of the city wall; the gates, however, can now only be found as decorations on the maypole.
