Right in the heart of Munich, the Kunsthalle is a premier destination for anyone interested in both contemporary and classical works . Spanning 3,200 m², it offers art, cuisine, and architecture in a central location in Munich.
The Hypo Cultural Foundation
The full name of the exhibition hall on Theatinerstraße is actually “Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung.” HypoVereinsbank established this foundation in 1983 to mark its 150th anniversary, and it made it its mission to promote both the visual arts and architectural culture. Two years later, the Kunsthalle was established in Munich; since 2001, it has been located at its current site in the Fünf Höfe.
It spans 3,200 m² across two buildings, of which just under 1,200 m² is exhibition space . The remaining space is allocated to the foyer and the café, among other areas, both of which are open to the public. From here, you can look out through the large glass facade onto the Perusahof and the Salvatorpassage with its hanging gardens. The Kunsthalle thus combines both areas of support for the Cultural Foundation in its concept: art and architecture.
Exhibitions at the Kunsthalle
With around 350,000 visitors annually, the Kunsthalle is one of Germany’s largest and most renowned exhibition venues. Unlike a museum, the institution does not have its own collection and, accordingly, no permanent exhibition. Instead, the exhibitions change about three times a year and range from prehistory to the present. Here, you’ll not only see works by great artists such as Monet, Picasso, and Munch, but also fashion and design by creators like Jean Paul Gaultier.
In addition to the exhibitions, the Kunsthalle regularly hosts events and after-work gatherings. For example, there are special guided tours for parents with babies or members of the LGBTQ community as part of Munich Pride. There’s also always a suitable program for children and teens. Every third Wednesday of the month, the Kunsthalle stays open until 10 p.m. for an after-work event, inviting visitors to unwind after work with DJ beats and refreshing drinks. Plus, every Tuesday you can enjoy a 50% discount on admission.
