Relaxing in the sunshine at Lake Starnberg or taking a dip in the Isar: that’s how many Munich residents spend their warm days. Unfortunately, that also means it gets crowded quickly—which then isn’t relaxing at all. Yet there are many other beautiful swimming spots in the Munich area, and one of them is still relatively new. Lake Hollern has only been open to the public since 2020 and is still flying under the radar for some. Here, you can feel real sand under your feet instead of grass, giving you that authentic vacation vibe.
Swimming day at the new lake
Many of Bavaria’s swimming lakes are natural bodies of water formed thousands of years ago by glacial meltwater after the end of the Würm Ice Age . In contrast, Hollerner See is a mere six years old. Ground was broken for the quarry lake in 2011 as part of an initiative to create a local recreation area.
On warm days, Hollerner Lake beckons with its clear, turquoise water and sandy beach. Spread out your towel, soak up the sun, and go for a swim. If you get hungry or feel like a refreshment, stop by the Hecht & Sonne kiosk. Here, you can settle into small deck chairs or benches made from pallets while enjoying snacks and burgers. In winter, there’s also a small Christmas market here.
Hollerner See Recreation Area

The 29-hectare Hollerner See is part of the 87-hectare recreational area near Eching, which was created from a former gravel pit . Here, you can not only swim and splash around, but also take long walks. The Mallertshofe Woods are also nearby and provide plenty of shade on hot days.
You can also go swimming with your dogs at nearby Mallertshofer Lake. If you’re looking for more action, head to Echinger Lake and show off your beach volleyball skills. But if you just want to unwind a bit and soak up some sun, Hollerner Lake is the perfect spot for you.
