While the exhibitions at the Munich City Museum have been closed since early 2024 due to extensive renovations, a true gem for film fans remains open, as the associated Munich Film Museum continues to screen films without interruption. But time is running out, as cinema operations are currently only guaranteed to continue until April 18, 2027. For all you cinephiles out there, that means: Seize the opportunity and secure your seat now at one of the city’s most extraordinary movie theaters!
Why the program at the Film Museum is so unique

If you’ve had enough of run-of-the-mill blockbuster movies, you’ll find a true film paradise at St.-Jakobs-Platz. The cinema impresses with a daily-changing lineup that ranges from in-depth retrospectives to thematically curated film series and special premieres. The absolute highlight for true film connoisseurs: All films are screened in their original format and language, accompanied by German or English subtitles. Even nostalgic silent films are brought back to life here, often with atmospheric live musical accompaniment.
Curtain up for your own creations at the audience cinema

In addition to the great classics of film history, the museum also offers local filmmakers a very special stage. The popular format called “Zuschauerkino” transforms the Film Museum’s big screen into a showcase for independent films. Whether it’s a feature film, documentary, animated film, or other projects, all genres and formats are welcome. For the upcoming screening on December 10, 2026, at 7:00 p.m., you can get involved as filmmakers yourselves and submit your own short films to present your stories to an enthusiastic audience!
