Munich and its Christmas markets are well worth a visit throughout November and December. If you’re looking for something a little more unusual, you can also combine the pre-Christmas period with a trip to Austria. In our neighboring country, cities such as Salzburg with its centuries-old Christmas market are well worth a visit. And the Christmas market in Innsbruck is also definitely worth a visit! The city is a “mountain Christmas” with several romantic Christmas markets.
What could be more Christmassy than strolling through a picturesque town surrounded by snow-covered peaks? Innsbruck puts the crowning glory on the pre-Christmas season. The main season lasts from mid-November until shortly before Christmas: As a rule, the various Christmas markets start on November 15 and last until December 23, although some remain open until January 6.
Pure romance: the central Christmas markets in the old town

Innsbruck’s Christmas market in the heart of the old town is considered the most traditional in the city. It is located under the famous Golden Roof and is surrounded by medieval facades. Check out the playful fairytale and giant alley, where life-size figures from famous fairytales and legends are set up. Every day at 5:30 pm, the Amras tower brass band plays Christmas music from the Golden Roof.
There is also another Christmas market in Innsbruck on the market square, directly on the banks of the Inn. It is often presented in the style of a Tyrolean village and is particularly family-friendly. Here the little ones can ride on a nostalgic carousel and are entertained by a Punch and Judy show. Those who like more glitter are also in the right place: There is a 14-meter-high Swarovski crystal tree.
The Christmas market on Maria-Theresien-Straße is very modern. Innsbruck’s boulevard is transformed into a sea of illuminated trees, crystals and light installations. In addition to traditional arts and crafts, there are also international specialties and modern gift ideas.
Outside and yet right in the middle: The out-of-town Christmas markets in Innsbruck

If you find yourself in Innsbruck, be sure to check out the Hungerburg Christmas market. It is the highest market in the city and can be reached with the Nordkettenbahn cable car. Here you have a breathtaking panoramic view of wintry Innsbruck!
The Kaiserweihnacht at Bergisel – only open at weekends – is also worth a visit. It is particularly contemplative here: the market focuses on original, regional crafts and local products from Tyrol. Away from the hustle and bustle, you will find some peace and quiet here.
The St. Nikolaus Christmas market is a small, authentic and tranquil market. This Christmas market in Innsbruck is also ideal for enjoying peace and quiet and local products. And last but not least, the Austrian city also offers you a lot of creativity: the Wiltener Weihnachtszauber offers a particularly artistic selection, with handmade jewelry and a mix of regional and international delicacies.
